Quick answer: Before choosing the Motorola R7, check six things: the frequency band (VHF or UHF), whether you need a keypad and screen, whether you will use analogue or digital mode, the channels and range you need, what is in the box, and the licensing and support that apply to you.
What to check
- Frequency band. The R7 is offered in VHF (136-174 MHz) or UHF (400-470 MHz). Match the band to your existing radios and repeater, and to your environment: UHF often suits buildings, VHF open ground. See fixing weak coverage and dead zones.
- Model. Choose between no keypad and no screen (simpler, with the channel knob on top), or full keypad and screen (for menus and extra features).
- Analogue or digital. The R7 supports both, so it can work with an existing analogue fleet and move to digital later. See digital vs analogue radios.
- Channels and range. The R7 supports up to 64 channels, with 16 positions on the top channel knob. SATLEC's listing states a portable-to-portable range of 3-5 km. Real range depends on your environment.
- What is in the box. The radio is supplied with a battery, antenna and charger. Ask about extra batteries, speaker microphones, earpieces and any other accessories you need.
- Licensing and support. Confirm which radio licence applies to your frequencies and use, and ask your supplier about repairs and after-sales support.
